Sadly last month former Kent player Nigel Donovan passed away at the age of just 65. As well as being a kind and friendly man, he was also a very strong player. This position is from his best ever game, against fellow Kent player Chris Howell in the 1997 Major Open. Clue: it’s very tricky indeed to see this through to the conclusion, but you may still find the best move!

Answer to Puzzle No 24:
White draws with the remarkable 1 Kg7!

After 1… h4, white continues with 2 Kf6.

If black pushes the pawn with 2… h3, then after 3 Ke7 h2, 4 c7 Kb7, 5 Kd7 h1 = Q, 6 c8 = Q is a draw

Or 2… Kb6 3 Ke5! (threatening Kf4), 3… h3 4 Kd6! and again White will promote. A very clever study.
