9 August 2026 – Shreyas Royal British Champion

🎉 Congratulations to Grandmaster Shreyas Royal — 2026 British Chess Champion

Grandmaster Shreyas Royal has been crowned the 2026 British Chess Champion, making history as the youngest ever winner of the title. At just 17 years and 8 months, Shreyas narrowly eclipses the long‑standing record held by Michael Adams, who won the championship at 17 years and 10 months.

Shreyas grew up in South East London and played in many Kent Junior Chess Association events during his formative years. His connection to Kent junior chess is something we are immensely proud of, and his achievement will inspire a new generation of young players across the county.

In the 2026 Championship, Shreyas scored an outstanding 7.5/9, with six wins and three draws. The pivotal moment came in round 8, where he held nine‑time champion Michael Adams to a crucial draw — a result that helped secure his path to the title.

Well done, Shreyas, on a magnificent achievement and another major step in the development of what is already a remarkable career.
