Every pawn counts.
This game is a golden oldie, from 1937. You have the White pieces alongside Nicolai Krogius of Russia. Your opponent is Mr. Gauffin. It’s White to play. How can you gain an advantage with a surprising move?

Answer to Puzzle no. 9.
If White plays 1 Qd7?? then Black replies with 1….Ng3!!
After 2 hxg3, then 2…Rh6 is checkmate!
Magnus avoided this by playing 1 Ng3, so that he can retreat the Knight to h3. But he was still under pressure and Erigasi won a fine game.
